Holly breeding
Dec. 21st, 2014 10:03 amI plan to breed my CB Holly this afternoon around 5 PM my time (PST, or UTC-8) (8 PM Cave Time). I am breeding him with a CB White and will keep one egg, but if anyone wants to haunt the AP to try for any siblings that abandon, that would be the time to be there! I will update this post with an exact time before I actually breed.
ETA: Time of breeding: 5:15 PM (in about 10 minutes).
ETA2: He bred three eggs, so I got to make two other people very happy!

Date: 2014-12-21 11:59 pm (UTC)I've been lucky this year -- I caught three Hollies on the first day, all decent lineages -- my best was a 3EG with Marrows, very pretty, but I have no idea what I'll breed it with! Since then, I've caught two more, but the lineages were nothing special so I tossed them back.
It is a bit frustrating to see some people catch piles of pretties while others have trouble getting any at all. It's frustrating for me, too -- I wish I could breed 2G Hollies for everyone, but at only one a year, it's going to take a long time!
At least it's not as bad as it was five years ago! My first Christmas (2009), I never even saw a Holly in the AP, not a single one all week long. (Back then, there was no Teleport, and trading was done through the AP -- you would give the person the egg's code, and they would set up a link to "dragcave.net/abandoned/CODE" and start refreshing like crazy, and then you'd abandon the egg and just hope they caught it before someone else did. Usually, they were able to snatch it in the moments before it actually showed on the AP, but not always! Holly owners would have a couple of friends standing by when they bred, and give them the codes to their eggs, and their friends would snap up all the eggs before anyone else could even see them. So if you didn't have a friend with a CB Holly, you were mostly out of luck. Very few actually became visible on the AP. After Teleport, TJ made it so you couldn't catch AP eggs using their code, you had to actually click the egg in the AP, so people couldn't control who got their entire clutch of eggs any more. Some CB Holly owners were very displeased about that.) It's only since the raffles have increased the number of CB Hollies and TJ disabled AP catching with codes that the average user even has a chance at any Holly. I'm really thrilled to see so many in the AP, even if I can't catch most of them.

Date: 2014-12-24 11:42 pm (UTC)I was so glad when Teleport was introduced! Back in those days I had horrible internet -- all I could get where I live was satellite, which is very laggy, and it made catching anything rare impossible. My only golds and silvers were generous gifts, and it was always very scary to do the transfer and risk losing the egg on the AP, which happened more than once. Not only was there the risk of losing rare eggs in trade, you had to be online at the same time as your trading partner and use some kind of chat or IRC to coordinate the transfer. Made trading between different time zones very difficult. I remember occasionally staying up until 2 AM to transfer to somebody in another country. And also eggs hatching/hatchies growing up while you tried in vain to meet up with somebody.
We got Teleport just in time for me to receive my first Tinsel -- I was really glad about that!
